OP Desert Vanguard I
After the terrorist attacks of 9-11, global terrorism was on the rise and so was the global War on Terror. According to intelligence Al- Queda and other terrorists had ties to many Islamic middle eastern states. Fears grew that Iraq had connects to terrorists and were also stock piling weapons of mass destruction. With Iraq’s hatred toward the US, many feared that Hussein would supply Al-Queda with these devastating weapons. Moved by this intellegence, the US launched it’s attack on Iraq. Quickly the Iraqi government fell. WMDs were not found, but the US Military had achieved their goal of removing Sadam. Now the REAL work began…
The military was tasked with rebuilding the now headless Iraq into a modern democracy. The first step was to start winning over the “Hearts and Minds” of the Iraqi people through regular medical missions. These proved difficult due to the mounting resistance met from the increasing insurgency. The next step into healing Iraq was to provide security by rooting out insurgents. Finally, the last step was to provide security for public elections for an Interm Prime Minister and Government.
With days before the election with feelings growing tense and skirmishes igniting like wild fires in the desert grass, the US braced themselves for a bloody election. On the day of the election US military filled the streets of the city, but so did the Insurgents…
OP: Desert Vanguard II
Although the elections have passed, the violence and instability have not. The new interm Prime Minister (PM) lacks the political power to really control things. The power vacuum created when Sadam left is prime real estate for eager war lords, international neighbors, and terrorists alike. The insurgency has grown in the last 2 years. No longer are they the weak, disbanded force that used surplus AKs. Instead they are led politically by a War Lord, ideologically by Al-Queda, and supported militarily by an Iranian arms smuggler. The only thing keeping the insurgency at bey is the US military presence. Even the small force of Iraqi police changes their allegiance depending on the day.
